Your gums are an important part of your mouth’s anatomy, helping to keep your teeth in place so that you can speak, chew and smile properly. If not taken care of, your gums can become unhealthy. Unhealthy gums not only lead to tooth loss but can also cause more serious health issues throughout your body. Use these tips to help keep your gums healthy.

1. Brush and Floss Regularly

Keep your teeth and gums healthy by brushing at least twice per day and flossing at least once. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and spend at least three minutes brushing your teeth in the morning. Repeat the regiment in the evening, but floss as well to rid your gums and teeth of any food particles that your toothbrush couldn’t reach.

2. Go to the Dentist

No matter how well you maintain your teeth and gums at home, products made to be used in your bathroom are not as effective as the ones that your dentist uses. At least once per year, go to the dentist so that he or she can do a professional cleaning and check your gums and teeth for any health problems.

3. Quit Smoking

Smoking is one of the No. 1 causes of gum disease in adults and because it weakens your immune system, your body cannot fight infection as easily. Quit smoking to allow your gums to repair themselves and remain healthy.
